A wristwatch worn on screen, on stage, or on a courtside seat at Madison Square Garden does something that no advertising spend can quite replicate. When Paul Newman wore his Daytona, the model was discontinued and unwanted. When Steve McQueen wore his Monaco, Heuer was an obscure third-tier brand. When Sylvester Stallone wore the Panerai Luminor in Daylight in 1996, Panerai was an Italian military supplier with fewer than a thousand watches a year in production. Within months in each case, the watch became impossible to find. This is what celebrity does to horology.

Some celebrities are accidents of cultural influence. Others — John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Jay-Z, Kevin Hart — are serious collectors whose taste shapes the entire market. What follows is a partial list, organised by the depth of the collection rather than the size of the fame.

"You don't buy a watch because you need a watch. You buy a watch because you understand what a watch is." — John Mayer

The Mayer effect

Of all the celebrity collectors of the modern era, none has had a greater effect on the watch market than John Mayer. The musician — also a working collector and a published horological columnist for Hodinkee — has, on multiple occasions, single-handedly changed the desirability of an entire reference. The "Paul Newman" Daytona market doubled after Mayer wore his in 2014. The IWC Mark XVI Pilot, an obscure mid-range reference, became impossible to find after his 2017 column. Patek Philippe issued an open-faced letter of gratitude to him in 2019.

The pattern is increasingly common. When Jay-Z wears a Patek Grandmaster Chime, the secondary market for the reference spikes. When Drake posts a Richard Mille on Instagram, the same model trades at a premium on Chrono24 within forty-eight hours. The wrist, in 2026, has become the most efficient marketing channel in luxury — and the houses know it.
